Fly bombing raids into Gaza?

Back I ‘91 as the Iraqi army bolted from Kuwait with their loot the ran into the USAF. Watching the ensuing slaughter in Washington the Secretary Colin Powell (who knew a thing or two about war crimes from his service in Vietnam) warned his president to call a halt before this Turkey shoot placed a stain on the US army for ever. In Gaza, those on the receiving end are not soldiers but civilians. The murder of unarmed Israelis by Hamas is an outrage which must be addressed but the idea that the indiscriminate bombing of a densely packed city is the answer is another outrage. The reportage of the western media ias as you would expect, beyond appalling in its blatant bias and simplicity. The Hollywood style framing of ‘good guys v bad guys’ shows how the US media in particular has learned nothing from its debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan. The latest is that old joe is moving his aircraft carriers into the eastern med. For what? Fly bombing raids into Gaza? No. This has to do with local politics where old joe has to watch his right flank from attack by the crazies in congress who blame him for the fighting. In reality, the idea that Israel is facing some kind of existential threat is bullshit. It’s army would destroy that of Russia in an afternoon and everyone knows it. A fairer comparison would be if the ira had declared war on Britain and they in turn responded by bombing Derry or Belfast to kill the provos.
More attentive readers in this space will recall our mention of the assassination of Yitzak Rabin in 1995. I called it one of the most successful political killings in history. Not alone was the target killed but so was his political ideology and party never to be seen again. Even the Mossad (no shrinkin violets) had warned Netanyahu that his bile about Rabin would stir up the crazies but ‘Israel’s lord protector’ refused to listen with predictable results. Thus its democracy began its slide into political oblivion. The last year has seen protests across Israel against reforms by Netanyahu designed to save his skin from corruption charges and to defenestrate the courts. This is the playbook of all the wannabe dictators as we see in India and Poland. For Israel it looks like the protestors woke up too late and the country’s enemies used the turmoil to plan their attack.
Expect an American version of this to unfold if it’s population doesn’t wake up to the threat promised and posed by Trump if he wins next year.
