Starmer abandoning the Palestinians to placate the rabid right
Back in the day there was never a dull moment in Irish politics. A broken economy, a low level civil war on our border, mass emigration and unemployment and endemic corruption by the religious and politicians were the order of the day. In one famous exchange in the dail the Labour leader dick spring called Charlie haughey ‘a cancer in the body politic’. This was correct and everyone knew it. But just because spring was right didn’t mean he did haughey any damage – far from it and the voters of north Dublin alway elected him with oceans to spare. On the other hand, spring, who would become tanaiste among othe high office achievements and deliver much taxpayer largesse to Kerry found himself voted out in 2002 in favour of a convicted gunrunner. Eaten bread is soon forgotten. It would be understandable if spring retained some bitterness towards his constituents for their choices. On the other hand they might say that their consistent voting tactics of mixing up the td’s has brought great benefits to the county. This is undeniable. Another cancer in the body politic fell on his sword last week but not before he had spread his contagion throughout the organism. It’s a moot question whether the original can ever be restored. Judging by Starmers speech last week you wouldn’t be optimistic. Pledging that a Labour government would not alone not seek to reverse brexit but would shun Europe in all respects has been rightly condemned as appalling stuff. Previously he had cast aside a half century of Labour policy towards the Middle East as he abandoned the Palestinians to placate the rabid right. Sad indeed. Meanwhile the American experiment gathers pace on its descent into the abyss. The future there is one party minority rule as the country is turned into a theocracy in the maw of mad christian evangelicals. Ireland won’t be immune from the fallout of these developments. As the man said: thems the breaks.
