The auld pig buyers of Ballybricken February 2020
The auld pig buyers of Ballybricken must be spinning in their graves. No Fine Gael TD in Waterford for first time. Adding to their subterranean apoplexy will be the fact the the wound is entirely self inflicted. Our old mate and colleague Paudi surely gave a wry chuckle as this result came in. The party hierarchy got so carried away with their own ambitions they shafted the one and only progressive politician in the whole county. The election and its subsequent denouement have merely copper-fastened the county perception as a place that time forgot. For the last 40 years Waterford has watched helplessly as the political goodies have gone west but never have the locals asked why this should be so. When Paudi put his head above the parapet regarding the proposed borough boundary changes a few years ago the silence from his fellow TD’s was deafening as he faced a storm of protest from the ‘Kilkenny’ side. I don’t know the issues in play or why the doe (dept of environment ) thought it was a good idea. I suspect it was a move to raise population count so that the city could qualify for additional hospital capabilities and education facilities. This was stony ground when set against the perceived loss of status by the Kilkenny side where the debate never rose above the risible, ‘the bastards want to steal our hurlers’. Meanwhile , Wexford has now surpassed Waterford in population number and look set to soar away putting pressure on the city as being the ‘capital of the southeast’. The fact that it’s in Munster doesn’t help either. I see Halligan has hung up his boots and can sail off into the sunset with his loot. In Ireland a TD is better off in permanent opposition because the money is the same and you have no responsibility but can snipe away at those who have. They say all political careers end in failure and the key word here is political. The Maybot for instance is up about two million since her ‘failure’ and the same is true for any ex leader who only get the serious money when they leave office. The exception here of course is the trump foundation who have monetised the presidency to an extent that would embarrass the borgias. Anyway don’t forget to buy the flowers.
